Professional Profiles:
Summary
Dr. Hassan Boubaker is a distinguished academic and researcher specializing in Phytopathology. As a Professor of Higher Education at Université Ibn Zohr, he serves as the Director of the Laboratory of Microbial Biotechnologies & Plant Protection. His expertise lies in biological and integrated pest management, postharvest pathology of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the development of biopesticides.
Objective:
Investigate the molecular variability of venom composition in Moroccan scorpion species, specifically Androctonus amoreuxi and Buthacus stockmanni.
Species and Regions:
Studied species: Androctonus amoreuxi and Buthacus stockmanni, both endemic to Morocco.
Collection from two regions: Zagora and Tan-tan.
Methodology:
Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) used for characterization.
Two sample preparation methods: Sandwich (Sand) and dried-droplet (DD).
Ion Signals:
Detected a total of 828 ion signals.
Sandwich method produced 56% of adducts, while dried-droplet method produced 44%.
Interspecific Variations:
Identified interspecific variations in venom composition between Androctonus amoreuxi and Buthacus stockmanni.
Shared 235 ion signals, with 226 and 367 specific to each species, respectively.
Geographical Variances:
Buthacus stockmanni exhibited clear differences in molecular mass fingerprints (MFPs) between the two studied regions (Zagora and Tan-tan).
Indicates intraspecific variations based on geography.
Intraspecific Variability:
Within each population, intraspecific variability in venom composition was observed.
Milking Frequency Influence:
Venom composition varied within the same individual based on milking frequency.
Methodological Significance:
MALDI-MS, described as a fast, non-supervised, sensitive, reliable, and cost-efficient approach for taxonomic identification and molecular variability characterization.
Overall Significance:
The study contributes to understanding scorpion venom plasticity, intra/inter variations, and their temporal and geographical variability.
Conclusion:
Molecular mass fingerprints assessed by MALDI-MS provide valuable insights into scorpion venom composition, offering a comprehensive approach for taxonomic identification and characterizing molecular variability.
